Here is another family who lived in Rhode Island. Jeremiah served as the Deputy to the general court in Newport from 1696 to 1705. He was also a deacon of the Baptist Church in 1701. Jeremiah and Ann had nine children that I know of. Their names and birth dates are as follows:

THE FAMILY OF SAMUEL AND MARY (FOSTER) BURDICK

Samuel Burdick was born and reared in Westerly, Washington, Rhode Island and was a member of the Sabbatarian Church at age 20. He was a carpenter and a farmer. He and Mary Foster were married about 1690 near Mary's home in New London, Connecticut.

Mary's first child, Mary, was born in Westerly in 1694 but baby Mary died in infancy. Their next six childern were all born in Westerly, as follows:

SAMUEL AND SARAH (COLBY) CRANDALL AND FAMILY

This Crandall family lived in the coastal community called Little Compton in eastern Rhode Island between the Sakonnet River and the Massachusetts state border. By the beginning of the eighteenth century, when this family lived there, Little Compton was a modest, sparsely settled agricultural community with a population of just over 600. The fields and farms that spread across rolling hills gradually were being cleared for crops and livestock and divided by stone walls, typical of the farm lands in the British Isles.

The head of this household, Samuel Crandall, was born in Westerly, Kings County, RI. His wife, however, was born in Little Compton.  They  had seven children with the following names and birthdates:

THE JONATHAN AND ELIZABETH (MERRITT) KNIFFEN FAMILY

"Rye, New York is a fascinating place that sits in the crossroads of America’s history, both literally and figuratively. From native peoples to European exploration; colonialization to independence, emancipation to immigration, industrialization and transportation, prohibition and suburbanization, Rye played an integral part. 

When the first English settlers arrived in Rye in 1660, the area was inhabited by the Siwanoy or Algonkian nation. The Siwanoy lived off the bounty of the land in seasonal campsites, spending the spring and summer along Long Island Sound and moving inland in the fall. They grew corn, beans and pumpkins and relied on abundant oysters, other shellfish and small game. Their dwellings or wigwams were dome-shaped, built by lashing bent poles together and covering the structure with bark or thatched reeds, thus enabling quick assembly and easy transportation.

On January 3, 1660,  an agreement between some Englishmen with the Siwanoy to acquire  land between Long Island Sound and the Blind Brook was made. Later in 1660, English settlers acquired Manursing Island, paying 8 coats, 7 shirts and 15 fathom of wampum. They named their village “Hastings” after a coastal town in England. By the time additional settlers arrived in 1664, there was no more room on Manursing. The new settlers built their cabins on the mainland where Playland and Rye Town Park are now located and named their settlement “Rye” after another English coastal town. In 1665, Hastings and Rye merged and the village on Manursing Island was abandoned." [Notes from The Rye Historical Society]

Apparently, the Merritt family arrived in Rye sometime before Elizabeth's birth in 1683. She married Jonathan Kniffen when she was 16 years old in 1699. They had the following known children:

Mary Park was born in New York City, Kings County, New York in 1678. She married Joseph Purdy who was also born in 1678, but in Rye, Westchester, New York. They lived in Rye, NY and had the following children, all born in Rye:

CONRAD AND ELIZABETH HOFFMAN AND FAMILY

These fifth great grandparents were married on the 8th of November in 1714 in Weckesheim, Reichelshein, Weteraukreis, Germany. Elizabeth's surname was apparently the same as Conrad's. They may have been cousins. I have a list of eight of their children as follows:

The family resided in Wolfersheim, Welteraukreis, Hessen Germany from about 1716, and all of them died there but Conrad, who emigrated to America. Wölfersheim is a municipality in the Wetteraukreis in Hessen, Germany. It is located approximately 34 kilometers north of Frankfurt am Main . [Wikipedia]

John and Elizabeth (Howland) Dickinson and Family

This sketch about John and Elizabeth Dickinson is uncomfortable for me to present to you because there have been some discussions and controversial comments about them. To begin with, our ancestor, Charles Dickinson, may not be their son because he was born in Narragansett, Rhode Island. Their other children were born in Long Island, New York. I see no indication that the family ever lived in Rhode Island, so I am worried about presenting our possible link to this couple that I have entered into our family tree. Some researchers say that this couple did not have a son named Charles. There are other disagreements about John's birthdate and questions about whether he had one, two, or three other marriages, and so on. Having told you all the above, I will go ahead with my original plan to tell you about this family but with a lack of confidence in the strength of their story. If we learn later that our ancestor, Charles Dickinson, was definitely NOT the son of this couple, I will undo my error and try to find Charles' true parents.

John Dickinson/Dickenson emigrated from England to Salisbury, Massachusetts in 1640. He was born in 1602 in Ely, Cambridge, England. He had a wife named Mary Taylor and two wives named Frances, according to some researchers. Frances Foote was the name of one of them. On the 10th of July in 1651, he married Elizabeth Howland Hicks, the widow of Ephraim Hicks in Duxbury, Plymouth, Massachusetts. John and Elizabeth had at least five children, as follows:

In 1658, John bought a lot on Oyster Bay from John Hinksman. In 1677, John is on a list of Freeholders of Oyster Bay, Long Island,  New York. The Town of Oyster Bay is the easternmost of the three towns which make up Nassau County, .... The town of Oyster Bay extends from Long Island Sound in the north, south to the waters of South Oyster Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, pictured here:

Elizabeth died in Oyster Bay, Long Island in 1683 at the age of 48. She "willed to her granddaughter, Elizabeth Dickinson: 1 pair of sheets and 1 pair of pillowcases. The residue to her 3 daughters, Elizabeth Dickinson, Lidia Browne, and Hannah Bosworth." [Lidia may have been the daughter of Ephraim Hicks]. John died in 1684, at age 82.
