JAMES AND ELEANOR SMALLWOOD YOUNG

These great grandparents lived on Prince Edward Island in Canada. James was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1785. James' first wife, Anna Stewart, died in 1808. There were no children from their marriage.

James married 18 year old Eleanor on the 14th of January in 1809. Eleanor was born in Murray Harbor, Charlottetown, PEI  on the 27th of September in 1790. (The picture above was taken at Murray Harbor in recent years.) James and Eleanor had fourteen children!
1809 Mary
1813 Elizabeth
1816 Violet
1828 Helen, our ancestor
1830 Matilda
Cecilia, George, James, John, Lavinia, Margaret, William, Thomas, and Durenda whose birthdates I do not know.

James had the title of Captain because he was a ship captain who sailed along the Atlantic coastline for a number of years. Eleanor's father was also a captain. I suppose they were in the business of shipping products from place to place.

Eleanor died in 1830 and James died in 1851. They are both buried on Prince Edward Island.

JOHN and MARY McKINNON STEWART and Family

These great grandparents emigrated from Scotland to Prince Edward Island, Canada. John, who was born in 1790 in Blair Atholl, Perthshire, Scotland, arrived in PEI c. 1806. Mildred Stewart said  (at an interview I had with her while she was visiting us in  North Bend, OR, abt. 1983.) that she believed that John, age 16,  " jumped ship". We can only guess at what his motives may have been to do that.

In 1991, Bob Shepard and I took the train to Scotland while Bob was on a sabbatical leave to study and research British Literature. From our train windows, we caught a glimpse of the large Blair Atholl castle, of tan-colored brick, and its beautiful woodsy surroundings. We were thrilled to see it!

Mary arrived in PEI on the ship, Clarendon, with her family, in 1808. Mary was born in Kilcalmoneel, Mull, Argyllshire, Scotland on the 22nd of April 1787. She was baptized at a local church there on the 27th of April of that year.

Mary and John were married c. 1808 in Queens, PEI, Canada and resided in North River in Queens where their children were born:

1812 Charles
1812 William
1813 John, our ancestor
1815 Jessie
1817 Isabella

1819 Eleanor

John died on the 30th of January in 1852 at North River. He was buried at the Highfield Cemetery in Winsloe, PEI, Canada. Mary lived to be about 87 and was dearly loved by all her relatives in North River. She is buried beside her husband at the Highfield Cemetery.

AMY KNIFFEN

This map from Wikipedia shows the closeness of New Castle to Long Island, where Amy and Aldrich were married.

Because of the surnames of Amy and her spouse, Aldrich Carver, I like to think of them as  close companions... the carver needing his knife by his side.  Amy must have been missed when Aldrich needed to go back to New York, from his new land in Ohio, to claim her as his bride. Her "sharp" wit may have been an asset to his shrewd political endeavors in Ruggles and she probably helped him "cut" through the red tape that  hampered him along the way.

Amy was born about 1801 in New Castle, Westchester, New York. She and Aldrich were married in New York and then they both left for Ruggles, Ohio. They  had the following children, all born in Ruggles Township:
1823 Sarah I.
1829 Phebe Ann
1830 Fannie Josephine, our ancestor
1831 John Randolph

In the 1870 census, Amy, widowed, is the head of the household with her son, John Randolph, carrying on the work on their farm. In the 1880 census she is living alone and died that year, age 80. She was buried next to Aldrich at the Savannah Cemetery in Savannah, Ashland, Ohio.

ALDRICH CARVER

It is obvious that there was little need for me to add much more to the following biography of our second great grandfather written by Russ Shopbell  for the book, "History of Ashland County, Ohio" by A. J. Baughman, published about 1880:

"ALDRICH CARVER was born in Tolland County, Connecticut. He came to Huron County in 1818. In 1819 he assisted in capturing some Indian murderers, who were subsequently hung at Norwalk. In 1821 he returned to [his former residence in] Cayuga County, New York, and married Amy Kniffin. In the fall of 1822 he settled in Greenwich, Huron County, Ohio, and in the spring of 1825 on lot ten and eighteen, section four, in Ruggles. Mr. Carver served as justice of the peace in Ruggles, and as commissioner and auditor of Ashland County. He was a shrewd politician, and a man of good native abilities. He died of cancer of the face in 1870 [1866], aged about sixty-five years. His family consisted of Fanny, wife of Daniel Huffman; Phebe, wife of Jacob Huffman, and John, who resides on the homestead. Mr. Carver was one of the petitioners for the organization of the township in 1826. It was called Ruggles, after Judge Almon Ruggles, who surveyed the Fire Lands. At the first election held January 2,1826, there were twelve votes cast: Perry Durfee, Harvey Sacket, Norman Carter, Truman Bates, Reuben Fox, Bradford Sturtevant, Jacob Roorback, Abraham Ferris, Justice Barnes, Daniel Beach, Ezra D. Smith and Aldrich Carver. The officers chosen were: E.D. Smith, clerk; Jacob Roorback, D. Beach, and A. Carver, trustees; Bradford Sturtevant and Harvey Sacket, overseers of poor; J. Barnes and A. Ferris, fence viewers; Reuben Fox and Perry Durfee, appraisers of property; N. Carter, constable; J. Bates, supervisor, and Harvey Sacket, treasurer. There were thirteen offices and twelve voters."

Margaret Cuppy was born in Brooke, Virginia on the 15th of January in 1788. At age 22, she married Abraham Huffman of  Hampshire County, Virginia on the 15th of March in 1810. Their first two sons were born in Ohio County, VA. Then the Huffmans moved to Jefferson County, Ohio where their first daughter was born. The next eight children were born where the family settled for  many years, in Clearcreek Twp., Richland, Ohio. Here are the names and births of their eleven children:
1811 Zacharia Ohio, VA
1813 Abram Ohio, VA
1815 Susanah Jefferson, OH
1817 Benjamin Clearcreek, Richland, OH
1819 John Clearcreek
1821 Mary Clearcreek

1829 Sarah Clearcreek
1829 Daniel, our ancestor [Daniel was born in Dec 1829, his sister, Sarah, b. in Feb 1829]
1832 Perrin Clearcreek

Mildred Shepard told me this story about Margaret: "While Margaret was finishing up her doughnut baking one fine spring day, an Indian walked into her kitchen door gazing at her baked goods. With a big smile, he put one doughnut on each of his five fingers of his left  hand, beaming with pleasure at his cleverness, and walked back out the door to show his waiting Indian friends."

Margaret died in 1862 in Ashland, Ashland, Ohio and was buried at the Ashland city cemetery next to her husband, Abraham Huffman.
