JOHN and MARY McKINNON STEWART and Family

These great grandparents emigrated from Scotland to Prince Edward Island, Canada. John, who was born in 1790 in Blair Atholl, Perthshire, Scotland, arrived in PEI c. 1806. Mildred Stewart said  (at an interview I had with her while she was visiting us in  North Bend, OR, abt. 1983.) that she believed that John, age 16,  " jumped ship". We can only guess at what his motives may have been to do that.

In 1991, Bob Shepard and I took the train to Scotland while Bob was on a sabbatical leave to study and research British Literature. From our train windows, we caught a glimpse of the large Blair Atholl castle, of tan-colored brick, and its beautiful woodsy surroundings. We were thrilled to see it!

Mary arrived in PEI on the ship, Clarendon, with her family, in 1808. Mary was born in Kilcalmoneel, Mull, Argyllshire, Scotland on the 22nd of April 1787. She was baptized at a local church there on the 27th of April of that year.

Mary and John were married c. 1808 in Queens, PEI, Canada and resided in North River in Queens where their children were born:

1812 Charles
1812 William

John died on the 30th of January in 1852 at North River. He was buried at the Highfield Cemetery in Winsloe, PEI, Canada. Mary lived to be about 87 and was dearly loved by all her relatives in North River. She is buried beside her husband at the Highfield Cemetery.
